The need for newly retired men to develop new friendships and interests as their lifestyle changed is a significant one. However, it was as a result of the request of Howard Aster, a trained volunteer discussion leader, that I, with the approval of former President, Jeff Scherr, publicized and initiated the Forum for male friendship open to the community. Jules Bender and Daniel Harwood, pioneer members of the forum added their dedicated efforts to recruit additional supporters. During the past eight years, the members expanded their activities beyond Tuesday discussions which range from current events and sports analysis to sharing travel experiences and personal anecdotes and jokes. Forum members have also visited the Culinary Institute, Lincoln Center, Montauk, West Point on day outings and summer overnight golf outings to Tanglewood and Cape Cod. In addition the single male members meet for dinner at local restaurants once or twice a week. “The friendships at these meetings encouraged me to join Temple Israel three years ago” said Mike Krackow. “I’ve never regretted that decision. I anticipate our meetings and recommend a visit to those male members who want to expand their horizons and make new friends.” Temple Israel’s Men’s Group should be a role model for other Temples as communities change and the need for new relationships emerge. I congratulate the group on their commitment and concern for each other. Claire Zimmerman |
